Shad is oily and not eater friendly. The best use for Shad is to use it as bait. You cut it in about eight pieces per shad and then put a piece on a hook to catch bluefish, striped bass, summer flounder, etc, any predatory fish. As far as Salmon, it's delicious. $8.00 a pound at the fish market. Salmon has a reddish flesh and it is mostly caught in the North Sea off of Scotland. Shad is caught on the east coast from Florida to Maine.

There are several species for both. The biggest difference would be that most salmon die after spawning and shad do not.

they are different sizes salmon can breath more on top of water than the other.
