this is an interesting "war". There is no clear winner or loser no matter what the outcome. it is focused on ridding the world of terrorism, and terrorist organizations are the enemy. however this war will never be won because terrorism is a popular style of warfare for radicals, and is also probably the most effective type of warfare. Another interesting point about this war is that the terrorists are not aimed to defeat the US Military, and they also have many other objectives across the globe that aren't associated with the US. I suppose defeat would be ending the war before the world is rid of terrorist organizations, but considering that is essentially impossible, this war can only end in defeat for the US..which is why so much controversy surrounds the war.

Definition: Struggle to free the world of militants, murderers, and people that would do harm to innocent civilians.
The enemy: Any group or individual that would that fits the definition above, note Timothy McVeigh definitely fits this category.
There never will be a "victory", because there will always be bad people that fit the definition above.
Defeat would come about if we ever believed there is a victory.

Its a war against followers of a fundamentalist Islam who will use violence to bring their part of the world forward to the 7th Century. Watch the movie "Osama" and see if you want to live in a place like that. Terrorism is the use of violence to further a political agenda. Only no Western politician will call a spade a spade for fear of being titled "insensitive" or racist.

You are going to get some asinine answers to this one. However, the enemy, besides calling them terrorists, which is an abstraction, is anyone the government wants them to be. THis is it will fail. In WW2, did we fight a war on Nazism? No, we fought a war against Germany, and they happened to be Nazi's. You can declare a war on a country, a region, or a state. You cannot however declare a war and expect it to be successful against an abstraction that cannot be defined other then as "Those that wish to do us harm"

This is a war that connot be "won" until all of those on the planet who strive to destroy, intimidate, and damage others through violence are dead. The war on terror will never end. It's not your traditional war. With the death of one enemy, another is born. The war on terror is concerned with striking down immenent threats to our safety and well being. When one is eradicated, another will unfortunatley surface, and the cycle begins again.
In todays fundamentalist world.....it's inevitable.

Terrorism is a very vague thing to declare war against. Once you defeat the current terrorists, there will always be other groups that you can include in your war. A "war on terrorism" can never be won because there is no end to it. Wanting to fight back against terrorism is one thing but violating citizen's rights in the name of "war on terrorism" is 100% wrong.

Simple! Anyone with familt members and friends killed will deem the killers as terrorists and fight back. That's why wars are evil and why retailiation seems an ongoing practice as we now see in Iraq. There's no end to it and we just have to keep saying "Support the Troops", and weigh the consequences of welcoming soldiers home in coffins while seating comfortably in our seats and secured home.

We (the United States) have made up this term (war on terror) to justify our sloppy unsuccessful takeover of Iraq. There will never be a victory here. We weren't fighting for anything in the first place and we can't "win" something when there is nothing to be won. Sadly we are becoming our own worst enemy in this war and creating lots of little American haters in Iraq who may someday be walking our streets with bombs attached to them.
