From some of these answers what people are saying is it is better to cheat on your spouse than to go your separate ways so you can both find happiness. Sorry, that seems ridiculous to me.

Divorce is not a sin.
Divorce is the ending of a marriage by the legal authorities. Divorce is not recognized by the catholic Church as having any effect on a marriage.
Since the Catholic Church does not recognize the validity of divorce, if a person receives a divorce and then gets married again, the person is considered to be in adultery because the first marriage is still valid.
Before a divorced Catholic can remarry, or a Catholic can marry a divorced person, the first marriage must be declared invalid by the Catholic Church. Thi si called an annulment.

Why limit this question to catholics?
Surely other denominations and religions have an opinion on the size and relevance of "sins".
The whole debate would rationalise divorce as preferable to adultery, all though adultery could be seen to be the a cause for divorce.

There is no bigger sin. They are equal in Gods eyes. The church may say that one is smaller than the other, but that is not how God sees the situation. Divorce is in the bible as an option. as something that has happened. he understands. David, who was considered to have a heart after God's, was an adulterer. Forgiveness is the greatest thing. Adultery, and divorce both end bitterly, and do not solve the problem. They are equal.

I'm not catholic, I'm Pagan. sin itself is a sin. The one who sins the most are the priests themselves by the way, You would find it hard to find one that hasn't sinned themselves.
You should watche some of the documentries about the Catholic priests and the Catholic church.
Over the centuries they have burned or killed quite a lot of woman, children and some men for biegn witches. Now hopefully that someone there will look it up and learn something.

It depends.
Probably adultery.
But so many sins (including adultery) can be committed before, during, and after a divorce.
Although a spouse who is abandoned and divorced might be guilty of no sin at all.
With love in Christ.

A white lie is the same as divorce and adultery.... God cannot be in the presence of ANY sin....
The only one who can save you is Jesus Christ...
Forget the priests, preachers, rabbis.... fall on your knees and ask Jesus to save you, before it's too late....
Every sin is mortal... only Jesus can save you from your sins... the Bible tells us that any person who says that he hasn't sinned is a liar

They're both considered mortal sins (i.e., sins which are so serious that they merit Hell if they are not confessed and absolved.) You can't say that one is more serious than the other since they both have the same effect of destroying grace and resulting in the loss of Heaven for those who commit them.

In my opinion, it's adultery.
I don't even consider divorce to be a sin, as sometimes it's in the best interests of all involved to move on. Not very often, but sometimes.
