Hello,

(ANS) Technically the answer is definitely YES!!, why? because:-

a) the diagnosis of schizophrenia is a technical term used by doctors & mental health professionals to describe a range of symptoms & states but the term alone isn't often very helpful in my opinion.

b) Whilst using lables is useful for doctors its often awful for those on the receiving end, those who are suffering.

c) Sometimes a person ends up identifying themselves as such & such a condition (oh! I'm a schizophrenic & a person second?). Rather than a human being first & a person suffering from a specific condition i.e. schizophrenia.

d) With schizophrenia its entirely plausable that the mind & psyche can under go some degree of natural healing over a long period of time. Yes! this is entirely possible and that would be reflected in the lessening of such symptoms as inner voices or inner chatter. However, although the symptoms have reduced the you might still have to accept that the underlying problem has not entirely gone way for good.

Hope that all makes sense?

Best Regards IR

I am a schizophrenic veteran of 40 years + medications. I no longer "hear" voices or have visual hallucinations but then I an still on the anti-psychotic medications.

Unfortunately there is a pervading opinion that schizophrenia has no cure. That defeatist attitude prevents any research or closure to the phenomena that hallucinations develop suddenly in an otherwise sound mind , may subside in time, and the individual may return to near normality. How can that be explained with current knowledge of how the mind works and how anti-psychotic medications are supposed to work on the brain?

Yes, you can still be a schizophrenic. Because schizophrenia is sometimes caused by a defect in the brain, there is always a chance of a relapse. Unless it was caused in other ways such as drugs, if you were taking drugs and have been off them now for 10 years then there is less chance of a relapse, because they have stopped interfearing with you're brain function.

Yes. There is no cure for schuzophrenia, however, your few episodes could have been caused by an outside factor, like drugs.

If you were on drugs at the time of the previous episodes, then maybe it wasn't true schizophrenia at all, but externally induced.
