Schizophrenia does not give you new personalities. But...Depending on what type the person has, it can really change the personality the person had before they became sick. And I think what you might be talking about...Is the fact tat most schizophrenics seem very, "flat" "dejected". Probably depression because of the condition itself, the agitation...Countless other things directly linked to symptoms of the disease. So in my opinion, the personality does change, and they might not seem like the same person before they got sick to family, friends, or even themselves.

Not really actually. I myself am actually schizotypie (nearly schizophrenic, just not quite as bad) and my fiancee IS schizophrenic. Its' hard. You have up days, you have down days, some days you're on top of the world, other days you're going to rip everyone to pieces because they look at you so they must be out to kill you.

It does not take away your personality. Really the thing I've found is that the "voices" in your head and often the "personality" that follows aren't a new personality, and they don't take away your old personality. However, they tend to be based upon elements of your own personality that perhaps the person tries to keep supressed, which can then manifest itself as a voice. The contrast between myself and "Damien" (poor name I know), I was always regarded as quiet, meek, subdued, shy, but friendly and pleasant. Damien when he did come out was always regarded as cruel, violent, malicious, aggressive, temperemental and arrogant.

The "thing" with the voices means you have to learn to adapt to your situation and deal with what they tell you and how often that makes you feel. People quite often become "Robots" as a result, they shut down their emotions as best they can so they can "survive" until the time they learn to cope again.

So Schizophrenia doesn't really take your personality away, but it can radically affect it, and at times you can even have a complete personality swap.

Does that help?

In general, no. However, negative affect schizophrenia can cause flat emotional affect and/or loss of consciousness.

Polly: Schizophrenia is a perceptual disorder, not a personality disorder. You're thinking of Dissociative Identity Disorder (used to be Multiple Personality Disorder).

Not really. I had a freind who suffered with paranoid schizophrenia. All it does is make you see stuff thats not there. He told me it was really strange because he got really para about things that had never even bothered him before. He was still the same personality it was just like there was something constantly bothering him.

From my limited study and reading I would say no it doesn't take away your personality but it can certainly impinge upon it and sometimes in severe cases another personality shows itself quite readily.
