Because, the ancient civilizations (specifically the Romans) have records confirming that there WAS a jesus and he DID die on the cross. The bible is a collective testimony of 66 people.
The debate is whether he was the son of god.
How do you know the civil war happened? Just because a history book told you so?

People complain about Christians not believing anything except what the Bible says. And then they complain that Christians will believe anything. Which is it this time?
Okay so it's gullible today. If Jesus wasn't true, then who did Nero blame for the burning of Rome? Christians?
Why were there Christians in Rome at that time, if Jesus never happened?
What were Christians saying about Jesus back in the day, and why was there such an effort by the Pharisees to stop it though unsuccessfully?
Even they did not deny that Jesus was amongst him.
And why was it so long that people said that there was no Pontius Pilate? And now we have buildings raised by Pontuis Pilate because they were covered up yet he was so good at building buildings.
So now the 'Pontius Pilate never existed' arguements are dead and gone, so people are back to the 'Jesus never existed' arguement, which also doesn't hold up to even secular history as I have briefly illustrated.
So the more you delve into the times situated around Jesus, the more evidence you will see that he definitely was around, and the whole world changed because of it.

I don't think that people believe Jesus is real because "the book says so." I doubt many people just checked out the Bible and said, "Hey, I better listen to this: God says he came to earth and He's still living in us today! Isn't that great?"
And your question is actually a superb one....Why DO some people believe? Why DO they trust?
And I'm talking about all kinds of people---the intelligent, the unintelligent, the rich, the poor, whites, blacks, reds, yellows, etc, all kinds of people.....why DO they believe, when there is no "scientific proof" (and, I'm sure with modern forensics, sooner or later someone will find something that has the DNA on it verifiably from Jesus of Nazareth, but it is not going to change one person's belief pro or con, so ...)
Anyway, to try to answer your question all I can say is it is given to people to believe. It is a gift. Why do some get it? and some not? I have no idea. But it is one of my top 3 questions for the Creator when I meet Him one day.
For this lifetime, all I can be is grateful. Grateful that he chose me, grateful than I was given ears to hear, grateful that I can believe fully and freely that Christ died for my sins, grateful that He would have died for me alone, had I been the only person on earth.
Unbelievable?
Yes, to some....
I am so grateful to be able to believe.

Perhaps a better question might be: Why do people believe Jesus is the "Son of God" rather than a regular fully human prophet.
I believe it is as someone already posted: People need to believe in an afterlife. The thought that this life is all there is and that there is no eternal justice or bigger meaning to all of life's tragedies - that's just too hard for most people to handle.

Other than the fact that myself and a lot of people that I know know Him personally and has had our lives changed by Him (you should hear their testimonies), there is faith, there's the prayers that I've had answered & seen answered, and there's the fact that God, Christianity, and the Bible are the most hated, denied, mocked, slandered than anything else in this world. The name Jesus & God are the only names that people in this world seem to have problems with. Just that alone is proof enough for me.

I believe Jesus is real because I believe in the Bible. The Bible has been proven to be true in many ways. It is the oldest preserved book. It was also written in many different places by different people, but nothing in the Bible contradicts itself. Also it is the only book that all prophesy has come true in. Finally, there are many scientific things that have proven that the Bible is true.
Hope this helps you understand.

There is proof that the man Jesus was here and he had a following later called Christians. Even most well read atheists know this.
We have non christian historians proving this including Josephus, Pliny the Younger (was a gov. under Caesar) Tacitus. We have letters and more.
There has also been huge amounts of prophecy that has come true from the bible, also archaeological finds show the bible to be completely accurate in these regards.
Also there was over 300 prophecies about Jesus alone that came true. There's more evidence about Jesus than Socrates and no one questions his existence, why?

For me, I don't follow the bible. It's a book I would like to read cover to cover, but it is not how I live my life. I believe in Jesus and I believe in God (and the holy spirit). Sometimes, you don't have to see things to believe them. Just because I have never met Jesus, God, or the Holy Spirit doesn't mean that I have never experienced things that defy nature and defy any explanation. That is where I get MY faith from.

If you knew what scriptural typology was you would understand secret truths. If you knew what salvation history was you would understand. If you knew about the Dead Sea scrolls you would know the evidence for the accuracy of the Bible makes it very credible. The key is realizing there are many literary styles contained in the Bible. There is history, analogy, poetry, and many other styles of writing. Putting these in their proper context is a beginning to understanding the truthfulness and realities the Bible contains.

You must know that, it's in the philosophy of man that he always believe in supernatural things, I am not saying that Jesus is real or not; men will always believe that there is someone stronger than him in this universe, either natural or supernatural....... So that's is the main reason why men always follow the holy word. Be it any religion, people believe in some superior supernatual being
