My friend has just found out that she has an allergy to Gluten. I am having a bit of a get together at my house this week and want to provide some nibbles to go with the wine. I don't want to make my friend feel as though I am going to trouble for her but want to make sure that she has something to eat. What can I prepare that we will all be able to eat without it being specifically "gluten free" i.e shop bought gluten free?

Hi,
there are lots of things you can cook and buy, boil some eggs,
you can make salads,( Heinz salad cream is gluten free,)
you can cook long grain & wild rice (tesco),and make a cold dish or a prawn curry,(read lable for curry sauce)
In tesco's they have a little section "free from" where you can get rolls(which are easier) they come in 4's in a box, they have pizza'a bases, you an make veggie pizza's (you can get the sauce in this section,) also pasta and cakes, there are cracker's & biscuits called "Trufree"here as well. you can cook chicken drumsticks, use olive oil,and boil some new potatoes, there's also caramelised onion houmous 190g ,
ardennes pate` with bacon 170g(check lables ) butter/ margerine you will have to read lables, there are gluten free beer's Green's do a few, and Strongbow cider is gluten free, tesco do 8 thick british pork sausages gluten free (tesco free from) in a purple lable, they are with all the ordinary sausages, branston pickle and heinz tomato ketchup are gluten free, fairtrade nuts and raisins, cashew nuts, and for a desert you could have swedish glace ice-cream there 3 /4 flavours. it is also vagan
( make sure by reading lables as sometimes they change)
If you want crisps, walkers do some but you will need to read lables, the ones that say suitable Coeliac's are o.k, Most wines ,spirits, sherry, port, cider and liqueurs are gluten-free (again read lables, ) and most beers, lagers, stout and ales contain varying amounts of gluten, the only one that is gluten-free the I know of that is o.k. for your friend, is Greens natural lager,I hope this will help you, keep your friends separate from yours,
I'm a Coeliac I cannot have gluten, rye, barley, oats,or wheat , I have been like this 15 months now, it is horrid
I hope you have a good night.enjoy it
Has your friend been told by the doctor/hospital that she has this allergy. she maybe a Coeliac, if she is, she can get bread ,rolls, pasta, crackers, crispbbread, biscuits and cakemix/breadmix on prescriptions from the doctor and join the Coeliac U.K they send out a book with everthing that is gluten free,if she doesn't join they send the book for £10-12

Ahhh! My favorite question! SOmeone who actually CARES what other Celiacs have!! What your friend probably has is Celiac Disease, she probably just said an allergy bc its easier to explain that way. U can visit the links I'll list for more info on the actual disease but high five to you for being a caring friend!!

As for food suggestions:

Most cheeses are ok, though stay away from Bleu CHeese, sometimes Its made with gluten.

There are GF crackers available from Glutino, they are reallyg ood. They're called Glutino Crackers, the website will say "similar to Ritz crackers". U can pick up a box and have hers seperate.
Wine should be fine as are most alcohols.

BTW if she wants any of this info and more feel free to have her contact me via email .Or tell her to join the Yahoo Group SillyYaks, there are over 2500 members on there who love to help newbies!!

Anyway, most olives, pickles and other vinegar foods are fine, especially by Kraft or Heinz. If the label says Contains wheat, put it back! If it doesnt say wheat, look a little harder. I'll also post the link to hte forbidden foods list that can help u when shopping.

Fruits, veggies and meats are almost always gluten free, buy them in their natural state. Watch out for flavorings.

The chocolate fountain sounds great, jsut be sure the chocolate u use is GF, not all are. Hersheys most is but some like Ghiardelli can have gluten in them and be harder to find.

Most walmart brand items actually will say gluten free so it may help to shop there.

Online stores are cheaper anyway and u can find gluten free foods on there as well as regular party foods.

Most dips are iffy, try making your own. Search "Gluten Free Dip" on google.

Have a great party!!

Great GF brands:
Pamela's (bakery mixes, cookies,)
Kinninnick's (frozen pizza, bread, donuts, muffins)
Glutino (crackers, breads, bagels, cereals)
Bob's Red Mill (Flours, mixs)
Amy's (frozen dinners, mac and cheese---not all are GF, read labels.)

Is Salad Cream Gluten Free

I have to eat everything that is gluten free as I am gluten sensitive. You may wish to find out if your "friend" is gluten sensitive or gluten intolerant. The intolerant one is the harder one to control since you cant even have the slightest bit of gluten.
But to answer your question....your friend could nibble on the following:
corn chips like Tostitos
Any Meat-Roll ups or roller coasters.-Meat with cream cheese or another cheese inside.
She/He can eat pretty much anything as long as whatever your serving does not have Wheat in it.
This means:
No crackers
No bread-unless rice
No cereals-unless rice or amaranth
No pasta-unless made from potatoe or soy or corn
No cookies
No cakes
A ton more stuff...but I am sure this helped you for now.

Friend of mine has this to.
Generaly anything that doesn't contain grain. The obvious one is bread. You are right not to try to buy separate nibbles. The best thing we found was to cook ingredients ourselves for every one. No one else need ever know. A popular dish my wife nocks-up is chicken tika massala with rice

Do try to ensure that any bought produce has the "no gluten" logo on it. .

You could offer vegetables and dip, or perhaps have a meat and cheese platter. I think you might be able to find specialty breads without gluten- though it is a good idea to check just in case.

Good luck to your friend, and enjoy your get together!

If you are just doing nibbles, a lot of the flavours of Doritos are gluten free (not all flavours though, check the packet)
Hope this helps!

depends on he nibbles - but cheese is ok so long as it doen'nt have breadcrumbs and by law now all snack items like crisps etc have to say on the packet what is in them.
Any fresh meat, fish or veg or salad stuff is also ok. Go to coeliac.co.uk for mor info
