I have two young ones 8 and 6 who are off to a great start academically. How do I set them on the path to go to college at a young age. I'm thinking more along the lines of motivational so that they really see it as something they will look forward to and want to work for?

Talk about college as though it were the normal follow up to high school, just like brushing your teeth is the normal follow up to eating breakfast. Treat it as an expectation.
Motivation is a little trickier.
My children knew I saved money for their college educations. One day, when the older one was about 6, we got the good news that a friend's child had received a full scholarship to college. After explaining what that meant, I told him that if he got a scholarship to college, I would GIVE him his college money. He thought for a moment and asked if it would be enough to buy a car. Assured that it would be, that became his personal plan--to get a scholarship so he could buy a car. When he asked how to get a scholarship, I explained that the best way was to get excellent grades and/or to be the very best at something in his school. Worked.
Getting back to your question, talk about people your children admire and how going to college helped them accomplish what they do. (Favorite teachers, grandparents, pediatrician, minister, sports heros, the list is endless.) They will learn that college is a tool to be used to get what they want as adults.

The more you're involved with their education - the better off they will be.
Here, in Oregon, we can open up a special account (for a child) which is for college only. We can deduct the yearly contributions on our tax forms. My son is doing this for all 3 of his girls.
