Its called FMLA he has to let you go. If he is giving you a hard time then maybe it needs to reported.

It's not illegal, it's just not nice.
I don't know for sure, but it could be the hospital or surgical center's policies that a parent or legal guardian has to be on the premisis when your minor child is having surgery. If this is the case, you have no other option.
I don't know what the minimum requirements are, but look into whether or not you can have the FMLA back you up. If you can use it in this circumstance, do so. Basically, it will allow you to take an unpaid leave of absence to take care of your child in a time of illness, and your job is protected for that period of time.
Good luck! I hope everything turns out okay.

As a mother, I can only feel your pain. I think that it is hard to even have to think about choosing between your job and your child. As you know, NO job is worth the heartache. Tell your boss that you ARE going to be with your child and you are sorry but your kids come first. If they are any kind of human being at all, they will understand. If they don't then you are wasting your time working for a person that is not worth your hard work or your time.

not sure where you are from but in England your employer must give you unpaid leave if it concerns a child under 5 and this doesn't just mean for operations. if you think you should be with your child then they have to give you the unpaid leave. and they can not hold it against you although some will.

Most jobs ask you to use vacation time, etc.
If it's a legitimate reason, you can use FMLA if you qualify. It's unpaid, but at least your job is protected.
We unfortunately do not live in a country where mother's time is protected.

It might depend on your state. For example I hear Minnesota has something like a "working parents bill of rights" that are state law.
