This is for the staging of a musical, Fiddler on the Roof. We are wondering if during the Wedding Scene, is it necessary to build a gate to seperate the men and women? We're trying to follow closely to tradition, for example, we have a traditional canopy. The actors are already seated on the proper side of the bride and groom, based on their gender. Thanks for your help!

I've seen a production done where they were separated by a ribbon tied to short poles (about waist high) which acted like a gate. That shouldn't be too hard to build or budget for. You can go to craft store and get several ft of tulle for around $ 6 - 10. It was easy to move too.

For staging a musical I would suggest you go with the separation.

Even though where and when during a wedding should gender be separated is a debate even in Orthodox circles.

If you want to convey a sense of tradition go with the separation.

Yes-you can do this very easily though. As long as they are separated by something-doesn't have to be anything major like a wall. BTW-the canopy under which a Jewish marriage takes place is called the chuppah. (not ch like in charity-but gutteral h)

It woould depend if they were orthodox. If orthodox, then yes. Conservative or reform, not necessarily. I'd say for a staging of Fiddler on the Roof- probably- as long as the costuming is consistent as well
