I don't know, but that's a good question!

My ex-boyfriend used to say "ungodly" as a compliment, too, like, "You are just ungodly smart."

Because the original meaning of "aw(e)ful" is: inspiring awe.

So it's a rather impolite way of saying something is so "terrible" (another word that used to convey the overwhelming power of the almighty) that its dread-fulness (ditto on dread,) is so extreme that it compares to the unspeakably intense emotions inspired by the touch of God.
