I so desperately want to agree with the comment "one bad apple..." but I can't. What spoils the "bunch" are the stereotypical types who point fingers saying if one is bad...all are bad.
Lets use the same rationale with every other walk of life. If you have one bad pilot....all pilots are bad. One bad doctor...all are bad. It's a wrong way to think!
We look for an easy target to blame upon our government. Police represent the laws so it's assumed police MAKE the laws. No we don't....legislators do! The police simply enforce those laws made by the legislators who the PUBLIC votes for!
Are there bad police? I'm sure when you look at the approximate 800,000 plus law enforcement officers throughout the United States....you're bound to find one or two that wear tarnished shields. The rest of the good officers are doing pretty well...in my book!
Best wishes!

My dad was a police officer for a time before he pursued a career in forestry, so I was raised to see the police in a positive light. However, my distaste for the police has grown over the years. The police appear to have all the time in the world to pull people over for minor violations, write tickets for skateboarding, and all the other little infractions that bring a few bucks into the city/county/state and don't require too much stress. All the low hanging fruit gets picked while the hardcore stuff continues to grow and thrive. Once all the child molestors, gang bangers, and all the other REAL crime gets taken care of then you can start patrolling the streets to make sure kids wear the bike helmets and grandma puts a front plate on her car. To me this is why people disrespect the police- messed up priorities.

When I was growing up I was repeatedly harassed by the police. I'm not black or a criminal either. I was a skateboarder...you know, a real threat to society. Nevertheless, I was harassed and bullied enough on a consistent basis to rub off any illusion as to what kind of person wants to be a cop.
There are plenty of exceptions, but in my experience the stereotypical bad cop is:
1.) a meathead
2.) weightlifter
3.) intellectually inferior (who is both ignorant and proud of it)
4.) bully
I have met some cops who aren't anything like this, but many more who are. I am sure it's like anything else where the young ones are hot-headed and over-eager, eventually mellowing with age.

well there are bad police men out there giving the good ones, which are doing their jobs, a bad name and it's hard to tell what police is bad by looking so some people automatically distrust all of them.
also when you hear about police brutality's and police illegally searching blacks , Asians and basically discriminating against people in the UK and all over the world you just don't know if this police walking down the street is a racist, crooked, doing scams and dealing with the drug dealers you just can't tell.
Really though i feel bad for the ones that are doing their jobs and getting disrespected.

They are doing their jobs. Some aren't though and that's what ruins it for all of them. If someone has a bad experience with the police, they most likely will not respect them. I had a terrible experience with some male cops when I was younger and it took me a very long time to trust the police again and I have close family who are in law enforcement. I still am very wary though. One really bad experience could ruin your outlook on life. I do respect all law enforcement NOW. They put their lives on the line to save ours. They chose to come to this world and have the hardest job of all, the Protector. They deserve respect but you also have to give it to get it. There should be no "Good Cop, Bad cop" just good ones.

As a cop I thank you. We, as a whole are an honorable profession with values and integrity. Yes, just like any other profession, you have your bad seeds which give us a bad name.
As a cop and a citizen, iwas brought up to believe you give respect to get it. It's that simple. you catch more flies with sugar. We don't make it a habit to harrass people, belittle, or disrespect them. We aren't out there to make your life miserable or to set you off. Just like every other hardworking American, we are doing a job. It's selfless, taxing, and the pay sucks, but I wouldn't change what i do for the world.
I personally enjoy helping people and in doing so I expect to catch flack and abuse from the average citizens. It's part of the job. I was once told if you are upsetting someone your probably not doiing your job right. That means to say your gonna tick people off from time to time, it's just part of the job. It's not like we try to, some folks are just abrassive.

I guess they know they are doing wrong and they don't like to get caught & take responsibility for their actions. I'm sure they won't feel that way when they Need an officer's help. Unfortunately there are officers out there who take advantage of their authority and mistreat others, but that is in every profession and it shouldn't stand for the department as a whole.

YES! People are immature and selfish, they only think about themselves, the police are trying to protect people, that is their purpose, if they bug you it's because you're doing something against the laws that are set up to protect people. Don't be dumb and they'll leave you alone, and if they do bug you for some reason, just be courteous and they will go away, don't be hostile. DURRR. Thank you for saying this. You made my day!!

Doing their job my butt!
I had a business stolen from me by an employee. He went in on a Sunday and took everything out. I called the police and they took a report. A month later I called to see what was happening. The SOB told me there was no crime committed so I'm out $20,000.
Doing their job my A S S!

Well now let's see.
The cop who shot the Marine on leave because he obeyed their commends.
The cop in Sacramento convicted of raping women while on duty.
The cops in NY that blew away the guy coming out of his batchelor party.
The cops that murdered the 80 year old women in her house on a bad drug bust.
How long do you want this list to be?
