I've recently tried commiting suicide by swallowing 13 tylenol pm's & xanax with it, so i was prescribed Lexapro 10mg, for major depression, ocd & anxiety. This is the first anti depressent i've been on, and Lexapro was okay for the first couple weeks, no side effects, helps me sleep at night, but i do not think it is really helping me for depression, but in the past couple days i've been feeling really hyper, like im going to jump out of my skin, i dont know if that is normal, is it? Thanks.

The best thing that you can do is talk with your doctor. Are you seeing a therapist for counseling, as well? This is something that you definitely need to be doing.

Talk with the doctor who prescribes your medication. Let him know how you are feeling and ask if it is a normal side effect or if it will go away.

You are only on 10mg of Lexapro, so you are at the lowest dose. It is possible that your doctor can up your dose or even change you to a completely different medication. Do you feel like it is helping the OCD and anxiety?

It is always possible to call the doctor's office and ask to speak with the doctor's nurse. She can help you to figure out if what you're experiencing is normal and whether or not you should see the doctor to try to change things up a bit.

I have severe clinical depression with panic attacks/anxiety, OCD and some PTSD. 10mg of Lexapro did nothing for me so I'm up to 30mg. My doctor said that since I have different problems, not just depression and basic anxiety, that a combination of drugs would work well for me.

I was put on Klonopin for the panic attacks and was just recently put on Abilify as a 'mood stabilizer'. It's an antipsychotic that will help with my weird thinking, OCD and mood swings. It's good for acute manic episodes for people with bipolar disorder. I NEVER had problems with mood swings or mania until I was put on the Lexapro, so it's possible that the Lexapro causes it in some people. Hopefully, the Abilify will help with that. Abilify is VERY expensive so maybe ask your doctor about other mood stabilizers like Zyprexa, Risperdal or Seroquel. The downside is that Zyprexa usually causes a lot of weight gain. Abilify supposedly does not cause weight gain at all...

IF you actually have bipolar disorder, then yes, antidepressants like lexapro can trigger some of the bizarre and abnormal mood symptoms in that disorder.

However, bear in mind a couple of points. First, depression WITHOUT bipolar disorder is about 15-20 times more common than depression WITH bipolar disorder, so chances are fairly low that you have bipolar disorder.

Second, "akathisia" (a subjective sensation of physical and/or mental restlessness) is a common side effects of many psychiatric medications, including antidepressants like Lexapro. Oftentimes, it comes up in the first 1-3 weeks and then subsides after regular use, so it may be temporary. It is important to distinguish this from the increased activity seen occasionally in some people with bipolar disorder.

Therefore, it would make sense to discuss with your doctor questions about your diagnosis (and why), as well as the possibility of akathisia as a side effect.

As always, discuss these and any questions with your doctor.

I took Lexapro for depression (I'm bi-polar) and it didn't do anything for me. I didn't have mania either.

I don't know if your symptom is normal.... I'm just saying my experience. I also experience sexual side-effects (no orgasms).

Right now I take Abilify for depression, Geodon for mania, and Lamictal for a mood stabilizer. It's working out well for me. No sexual side-effects either.

Medication is a very individual thing and I hope you find the right mix.

Hi Andrea,

Long term use of xanax can cause suicidal thoughts. It is a benzodiazepine. Read this http://www.benzo.org.uk/ashbzoc.htm and read this http://www.benzo.org.uk/manual/
You can definately become hyper or manic from antidepressants. You can also become hyper or manic by withdrawing from benzodiazepines such as xanax abruptly as a withdrawal syndrome. I would wonder if your doctor stopped your benzodiazepines after your suicide attempt and plunged you into withdrawal. Mania is a serious mental state and if a drug is making you feel that way you should reduce your dosage or consider stopping it.

If you were not properly diagnosed in the first place, and you have bipolar (manic-depressive) disease, then yes, Lexapro may activate mania.
