We would be hosed. No question about that.
If Iran, N. Korea , or China were to attack us, we'd be in serious trouble.
There would be no National Guard to speak of because the majority of them are doing tours in Iraq.
If that did happen, I'd re-enlist that same day.

Common Misconception: The Military is no where near "Strained"
It's tired. People are getting deployed on 3 or 4 tours. It is no where near weakened though. If anything, we have become much more powerful than when we first went into country.
I mean ffs. How many Armies in the world do you think have small transports that can take a direct hit by an IED?
1 that's how many. Our small transports (HMMWVs) are stronger than most country's TANKS.
Hell, today we can be blown up and not be hurt. In Vietnam and WWII riding in Jeeps people would get their heads cut off from wire strung between two trees.
We are no where even close to being weakened. Just tired. There is a difference.

In the highly unlikely event of an invasion from Mexico or Canada, or an airborne invasion by the Chinese, I don't think you'd have to worry about a draft. This is a war that would be fought guerilla style. Regular military units would also engage the enemy, but I think that those behind enemy lines would fight as freedom fighters. We may not always like or agree with our country, but I think most Americans realize that it's a heck of a lot better than what everybody else has got. The reason there would be no draft is a lot of "AMERICANS" of all nationalities would volunteer to defend their homes. Army and Proud. RANGERS LEAD THE WAY!

To protect my family and grandchildren and the freedoms I enjoy, fat 61 year old out of shape veteran that I am, I would volunteer to do whatever they would let me do, and it the enemy was drawing near my home, I'd be out there in the trenches with whatever weapon and ammo I could muster to make them sorry they came into MY country and attacked MY people. Are you ready to defend this nation and the freedoms you now enjoy, IF it is attacked from without (like on 9/11)?

we have less than 1 third of our troops deployed on operations around the world. im pretty sure we would cope. the attacking forces would have have to have a forces ratio or 3:1 to have a successfull attack on our own soil.

Trust me, if we got attacked, we would have enough forces to resist until our forces abroad were able to get here. Just because the military is strained doesn't mean they aren't where they are supposed to be. Not to mention all the soldiers on leave would be called back to defend this country. So stop worrying, because there's nothing to worry about.

Who's going to attack us, Canada?
OK, if a bunch of wild Canucks cross the border and start shooting, I am fully willing to implement the draft and send my kids off to war.

I oppose the draft to a great deal! I'm 18 and I would never serve a country who forces the people to do so. If a country is strong the people will fight WILLINGLY, it is when a country is weak they have to beg. If we were attacked Americans would do as Americans have done in the past...board up windows and hide under the desks. Don't want to offend any one, but it's true.

Yes, absolutely. Actually that is the reason we are in Iraq still, but people who wish to create ill will seem to forget that. Our military is doing its best to protect us and I am sure we have no idea how close we have come to being attacked since 911. God Bless Our Troops.
