Mine never gets hard if I pour in out of the box and put it in a Tupperware container. If you don't have Tupperware, I wouldn't trust any other containers to do the job, to be honest.

But there are a few tricks to keep this from happening:
1. Keep brown sugar soft and useable by placing a piece of bread in your container with the brown sugar. (which menas you do not keep the brown sugar in its original box)
(NOTE: Some people complain of bread crumbs getting into their brown sugar)

2. A method to soften brown sugar that has hardened is to place a slice of apple in the hardened brown sugar to soften it up quickly.

If you don't have an airtight container, I think a ziplock bag could work.

Another suggestion: If you're not using the brown sugar for baking, buy the granulated brown sugar.

Mine has never hardened in an airtight container.

place a moistened cloth over the open container and leave it for several hours .

Hard brown sugar will soften if you place a cut apple piece in the container overnight. Remove apple piece next day and sugar will remain soft.

If the brown sugar is in a box, put it in a plastic bag. Run a little square of paper towel under the faucet (smaller than a postcard). Wring it out, then put into the bag, seal, and stick in microwave for 15-20 seconds. You might have to keep checking it. But I guarantee you, it works like a charm.

Put the brown sugar in a bowl, sprinkle a tiny bit of water on it, cover it, and put it in a microwave for a half minute or so depending on the amount you want softened Ken

And to keep the brown sugar soft, place a terra cotta ( clay ) disc in water over night and then in the sugar container. It will slowly release the mositure into the sugar.

Microwave it for 15-30 seconds on high without any additional water.

Easiest one of found to work would be to place a slice of toast inside the container where the brown sugar is. Works like a charm.

Brown sugar dries out when it is exposed to air. It should be packed air tight. Boxes of brown sugar dry out quickly because the waxed paper bag in which the sugar is contained doesn't seal very well. Put your sugar in a tupperware or other plastic container that has a good seal and it should keep longer.

Do not toss your sugar
Put it in a coffee can and the bear will soften the whole mess.
I bought several after they worked SO well ,,as Christmas's presents.
I have two in my can and I have two in the cupboard.
When I have another bake.. I soak the 2 spare and take the old ones out.
PS:: Adding the bread or the apple etc,, I would worry about some mold growing.

Keep it in an air tight container. Or make sure the little brown sugar bag in the box is closed tightly.

They sell little plastic air tight brown sugar containers at stores like Target, Walmart, or Bed Bath and Beyond.

Adding a moisture adsorber. You want something safe around food that is easy to remove from the sugar. I've seen ceramic pucks made for this; also, make sure you have the sugar in a sealed container.

Put the box of brown sugar, in a ziploc bag with a piece of bread. The bread will harden up, but the brown sugar will be perfect. Sounds strange...but it works! Oh, and change the bread every once in a while, too.

don't use it. You can acheive the flavor of brown sugar by using the specified amount of granulated sugar + a glob of molasses. It's also better b/c you can control how light/dark you want it.
