Cold sores are a form of the herpes virus. Once you have this it is likely to be recurrent, but not probably not on a notably regular basis. Cold sores can last anything between 1 day and 2 weeks. Treatments like Zovirax and Compede are effective but I find the best thing (if you are in the UK) is an old emollient called Snowfire. You can get it in chemists and its a green stick, kinda like hard vaseline. It does look a little odd and smells a bit weird but it is so effective and very cheap.

Cold sores are caused by the herpes virus, the virus, once you are infected stays dormant in your body , and cold sores appear, when you generally are in poor-health, run-down, or stressed. They are not something to really worry about, apart from the cosmetic point of view, but there are many products on the market which reduces the redness, and dries them up.

try camphor phenique (sp) or the generic walgreen's brand. I get them sometimes and if I apply this as soon as I feel the tingling they don't come out. My mom gets them so I assume I got them from getting kisses from her (who knows??) I hope this helps
Oh, and I have not had them to spread at all. But like I said they never actually become sores. I just get a tingling sensation and a bit of swelling and I apply what I mentioned and they go away. I do know my mom gets them at least once per year on her top lip. I thought gental herpes was a different strand from the cold sore type. And my husband of 10 years has never had one. but dont quote me because I'm not a dr or nurse and like I said mine never actually became sores.

Cold sores are actually a family of the herpes virus. As such, they last until the virus goes dormant in your system. There isn't any particular medicine for them, either, since they are viruses...

cold sores are caused by the herpes virus type 1. How long they last depends on how you treat them, how often you have them and what brings them on.
Be careful, if you touch your face and then don't wash, you can spread the virus to your genitals and it then will mutate causing genital herpes. Avoid kissing, sharing of eating and drinking utensils, and of course oral sex.
