Just relax a little - the dentist will rub some stuff on your gum where the shot will be given, and if he's any good, you won't feel much pain - perhaps a second or two.

Just think of the shot as moving some of the gum/skin aside (sorta like flossing) putting the anaesthetic on the right part of the skin and after it snaps back into place. It's not bad. I just got two and it was fine, no pain.
Think about the comedy involved because lots of people are a little frightened of the shot. If you can master your fear here you'll have a one up on lots of scaredey cats.

Not really. Most dentists use a gel to numb your gums before they give you the first shot of novacain so you will only feel the needle moving around, you won't feel the pain of it going in. If you don't really want the pain, avoid the dentist... they are always painful...

Last time I got my tooth drilled for a replacement filling I declined anesthetic. Most of the hard work has been done but it was still close to the nerve, It made my eyes water and it hurt a bit, but everything was fine
Im not saying you dont need pain relief, but you are going to a trained proffessional and everything will be fine and dandy he is not going to hurt you.

Absolutely, get laughing gas. Otherwise knows as Nitrous Oxide. It eases the pain, discomfort and typically results in a really great, fun time at the dentist.

After the shots, believe me, you won't feel a thing. When I was a little kid, my dentist didn't believe in numbing the teeth. Try drilling sessions with no novacain, now that's pain!

Cavities hurt when food / dirt particles get into them.
One way to prep yourself for the fillings is by numbing the area with ice cubes:
Simply take one (or two, depends how wide your mouth is) ice cube and suck on it in the area. Repeat until numb. (NOTE: May cause brain-freezes!!! =D)
Or you could try frozen ice cream or any frozen / cold foods instead of ice cubes.
Another way is to dampen a cloth with ice-cold water and apply to the area until numb.
Good Luck!!!
(And I don't think that fillings hurt that bad!!! Don't worry, I think you can have ice cream afterwards =))

You might ask them to give you Nitrous-Oxide Gas which is a general anestic. It will make you entire body go numb. However, the Dentist may not have it oe willing to give it to you . But you can ask for a larger dose of a local.

Close your eyes and clench your hands into fists or grab the chair arms really hard. I sometimes even scratch myself (not enough to break the skin!) while the needle goes in to distract me.
I'm with you...I don't like needles at all. I hope it goes well for you and that your pain is minimal.

No, Not really except to think in your mind that it doesn't hurt. I usually find mind over matter to be the best pain medicine!
