American Interstate highways aren't built to handle the higher speeds that, say, the German Autobahn is built to handle. The straights might be OK (but with thinner road beds, the pavement goes bad in a lot of places), but the curves are not built and banked for high speeds. Plus, if anything does go wrong, higher speeds mean less time to react and more severe consequences if an accident does happen.

I've noticed that people drive slower due to congestion on the roadways. Just the other day, I saw two dum-dums speed onto the highway and try to cut over into the far left lane without looking. The second car almost sideswiped a H2 Hummer, which in turn almost careened into a family of 4 in a Buick.
I say if you want to drive really fast without speed limits, great; perhaps some of these people will "naturally select" themselves, its when they kill others it becomes a problem.
Eventually the novelty would wear off, along with the added fuel consumption and MOST people (keep in mind this is a generalized answer) will revert to 70-75mph. We DO NEED speed limits to create a system of checks and balances that acts as a deterrent in areas that are too heavily traveled or congested to not have a speed limit. If you're in the middle of a rural area, then I say let that slide and keep on going... slow down around major metro areas, its common sense.

If Interstates didn't have speed limits...
The disparity of speeds is what concerns me the most. You'd have a mix of traffic with cars going 50 to 65 because that's either all they are safely capable of mechanically or due to driver's choice. Then, if you have people going 90 or faster, as you suggest, they'd be passing the other cars almost as if they were standing still. If someone makes a lane change at the last second... not good.
Don't get me wrong, there are benefits too. Maybe the cops would stop pulling people over and sitting on the side of the road as traffic is whizzing by, literally inches away, at 65MPH! Also a dangerous and UNNEEDED situation!

Wait, you're saying that NOT having speed limits would STOP people from wrecking at 90mph?
That doesn't make sense to me. If you take away speed limits, then (most likely) many MORE people will be driving FASTER, likely causing MORE accidents at 90mph.

I live in Montana where we did not have a speed limit on highways for quite a while.
I don't think it makes any difference since many people speed, whether it is safe on not. People speed into large cities with all kinds of traffic around. They are heedless of the danger they pose to any of us who happen to be near by.
We need a posted speed limit to ticket those who drive without regard to safety.

Nonsense! All of those those who say that that's safer tochronic with site visitors are in simple terms attempting to justify their very own dashing. there'll under no circumstances be a regulation enforcement human being to assert in the different case. The most secure way tochronic is to be utilizing on the speed reduce. in simple terms imagine, who's safer if a deer unexpectedly runs out in the front of the automobile, or once you've a blow out, or if a rock falls off the gravel hauler in the front of you - the guy going eighty mph or the guy going fifty 5? No, that is continually most secure to be utilizing the speed reduce interior the right lane of site visitors. once you come back upon someone utilizing slower than you, you basically accelerate momentarily to bypass him on the left, after which re-enter the right lane once you've effectively surpassed him. no one needs to be utilizing eighty miles an hour and no one needs to be utilizing interior the left lane in any respect, till you're actively passing someone.

I think it would be nice to have a Autobahn style road across the USA,
maybe linking NY with LA
Florida to Michigan
I-75 would be a good start, most of the highway problems would still exist eg:
backups
accidents
construction.
Like the autobahn you would have to have posted "suggested" limits especially through residential.
It would involve a lot of work,
a lot of law changes,
I dont see it anytime in our future.
It'd b nice sometimes though.................

Not sure what you mean by "people don't wreck going 90 mph".
The whole idea is not new, and there is government statistics that proves that raising or even abandoning speed limit is beneficial for safety, or at least does not hurt it.

people already drive slower than the speed limit, so i dont think that incresing it will help the people who safely know how to operate their vechile. the only people it would benefit would be the people outrunning to po-po.

The way that most people drive today I would guess that for the most part everyone would be dead.
