while there is already a politics section on Yahoo! here we are arguing first century Mediterranean politics.
Honestly, that's all the New Testament is, ancient political propaganda. Build a better god-man, gain more converts, have more political clout and financial resources. Gain enough and you can even stage your own rebellion or coup.
And I think it might actually be too late to vote.
Maybe we should have a 'First Century Mediterranean Politics Section' for the Christians, and the rest of us (Atheists, Agnostics, Pagans, Buddhists, Theists, Wiccans, etc) can have R & S.

According to MithrilHawk, we should all carefully consider the beliefs of the current suicide bombers, since they are so convinced of them, they must be true!
The first century Jewish groups were not the first, or the last, to fight against an Empire and die for their cultural, religious or political beliefs.
It really doesn't add any validity to the beliefs themselves, that some hold them with fanatical devotion.
Crazy people behave that way, also.

Deof, they were not after educated men and women. They stuck to the grass roots masses of the uneducated and the unwashed until they had gained enough clout to stand against the educated and powerful.
And at that point, 3rd-4th century, it had nothing more to do with spirituality than the Bolshevik Revolution or the Iranian Student Revolution. If you gain the Military, you get to make the decisions, and the Christians were as brutal a group of persecutors as anyone in history.

If you do not accept Jesus Christ into your life as Lord and Savior and live as a true and faithful servants of God, I can assure you this.....All of you atheists, agnostics, pagans, buddhists, theists, wiccans, etc, will have your own section, but it will not be in YA, it will be in the grave. That is, if you don't make it through the tribulation to learn the Ways of the True God of the Bible.

Except if the writers of the New Testament were after political clout, the last thing they would want to do is make up something that sounded even remotely like a Greek/Roman myth, because the "educated Romans of historical times did not seriously believe in their gods" and were very skeptical about myths.

I agree with you completely, and to the christians who say that unless we accept Jesus we're destined for hell, I say to them: Unless you accept Mohommad as the last and greatest of god's prophets, your fate will be worse than the lake of fire, you will be hung on a meat hook, your skin boiled off and just as soon as you wish it would stop, it would start anew. Mohommad says that he was the last and greatest prophet, even Jesus is beneath him. Muhommad sits at the right hand of god and decides who gets into heaven and who doesn't.
Of course, I already know you don't believe it, and neither do I. But at least you can agree that just because someone says it, doesn't make it so. Now, can you understand why I don't believe in your christ or his version of the afterlife? Yes, I'm talking to YOU, Drake.

I'm not an ardent supporter of the Divide and Conquer method, but I have to say your suggestion is by far the most attractive proposal I have read to date.

It's bad enough when you distort the truth about Christianity, but this comes close to being an out-and-out lie. One of the very reasons that the Jewish people rejected Christ as their Messiah was because He was not the triumphant King Who would free them from Roman tyranny.
They wanted a warrior, and instead, they got
Someone Who described Himself as:
Matthew 11:29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.
And when the Pharisees attempted to trap Him into a political debate about paying taxes, He avoided the subject altogether:
Mat 22:17-21 Tell us therefore, What thinkest thou? Is it lawful to give tribute unto Caesar, or not?
But Jesus perceived their wickedness, and said, Why tempt ye me, ye hypocrites? Shew me the tribute money. And they brought unto him a penny.
And he saith unto them, Whose is this image and superscription? They say unto him, Caesar's.
Then saith he unto them, Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar's; and unto God the things that are God's.
That's not a Man Who is heavily interested in politics. Nor were His disciples and followers -- after His death, they went to prison and death in the arena instead of playing an active role in government. Again, that's not a picture of a politically threatening group.
It doesn't say much for your obvious intellect and knowledge when you have to resort to twisting the truth and spreading blatant falsehoods to support your agenda.

Most or all of the apostles ended up imprisoned, tortured and killed for their beliefs that one man rose from the dead.
That's not too bright on their part unless they actually believed it.

Most of us would shift colors as soon as we found ourselves in a political forum.
That's why we have become constant parishioners at Pascal's Pub - NO danger lies here.

Of course, we shouldn't learn anything from the second world war, either. That's too far back, too.
