I suspect the primary reason the robes are yellow to yellow orange is because if was a cheap and easy color to dye with 2400 years ago.
Different colors are used in many sects, but the most common is Saffron (yellow/orange) or ochre.
Japanese tend to go more for the blacks and browns (considered earth colors), though even in my order the official robes (Kesa) are saffron.

well some monks wear yellow robes and some wear orange...i really can't remember the exact reason for them to do so...but there IS a reason however...it's connected to peace and love
usually Buddhists don't wear black,bright red and other such colours to go to temple...we usually wear white and other light colours because they are calm and we don't wear heavy jewellery...the whole idea is to be simple

Different monks and nuns wear different colors, depending on which "vehicle" of Buddhist thought they follow.
In Tibetan Buddhism they wear saffron and burgundy robes, for example... so there's no ONE standard.
