Hello Jim,

Feed Grade is corn grown for livestock feeding such as cows, pigs, chickens etc.
Food Grade is for human consumption.
These two categories of corn are very different in texture, flavor, etc.
The food grade corn is know as "sweet corn". There are many varieties of sweet corn. Some of the best tasting varieties are: Silver Queen, Sugar Cane, Sugar and Cream,
Golden Sweet Bantum.
The Feed Grade corn is very tough, dry, and bland but is very nutritious for animals.
You see, live stock are fed spring, summer and fall mostly on grazing grass such as orchard grass, timothy, fescue, oats, legumes, alfalfa and many others depending on the area of our country. In the winter they are fed hay and corn. The corn assists greatly in fattening up the Steer or hog etc. to make then much more tender as well as tasty.
Now that grains, especially corn are in demand for the manufacture of bio-diesel and ethanol the price of grain is going up. The farmers will have to pay more for the corn they grow and that will drive up the cost of beef, pork etc..

I hope this helps!

Corn from the same field and same harvest, can be either feed grade or food grade. The difference is how the corn is handled. Food grade corn cleaned better. More effort is used to keep insects and rodents out of food grade corn.

Feed grade is only edible to animals. Food grade is only fit for human consumption. It's all in the corn hybrid.

I'm a long time midwesterner, and I've accidentally had feed grade. It is not edible at all.

I buy chicken scratch ;; as I look at the mix,, there are other stuff (chafe like material or floor sweepings ..?? )
But I would not turn feed grain in a disaster.
If a friggin animal can eat it so can I .
Especially as I would boil it.
