Making mistakes. Some of my greatest learning experiences are mistakes. Use a good all-purpose cook book. The first time follow the recipe. The second time, experiment with something you think might be good: a change of spice or herb, trying it with a different meat, adding something you think sounds good. Play with your food. It makes a really good, innovative cook. Just learn your basics first by following the recipe the first time.....and forgive yourself your mistakes and get a pizza!

Get a copy of "The Joy of Cooking", and start simple. Most of all PRACTICE! Don't worry, everyone makes disasters in the kitchen when they first start. Start out with very simple dishes and just relax and have fun with it.

As others have said, practice is essential. However, even more important is the right attitude. Don't be afraid to make mistakes. Use recipe books, go on-line for ideas, etc.

Get a cookbook that you really like and use it often. Soon you will get comfortable cooking and you won't even need the cookbook anymore.

Practice. A good thing to remember is if you wont put it in your mouth, then you should not feed it to others either.
