As I understand it, Hiccups are a muscle spasm in your diaphragm. The goal then is to get rid of this spasm. Like any other spasm, massage and stretching are great. (unfortunately the diaphragm is hard to massage), so you are left with stretching. The best way to do this is... yawning. A deep yawn fully extends your diaphragm... and it is what all the breathing/deep breathing answers are getting at. Good luck... You are feeling very sleepy, you need to yawn...

hold your breath and swallow 3 times
or
look at the person next to you and tell them when you are going to hiccup next.

Massage your ear lobes.

No kidding, I get painful hiccups, and have done sipping water through a washcloth, holding breath, etc.. and this worked.

Fill your mouth with water and while holding it, bend over and drink tiny amounts of the water as often as you can swallow until it's gone. Stand straight up slowly and breathe calmly to keep from starting them up again! :) It works for me EVERY time!

Use your thumbs to hold your ears closed. Spread your fingers across your cheeks and use your pinkies to close both nostrils and then swallow. You might have to do it twice, but it works.
