It is possible. The orifice size on the burner has to be changed, and the regulator has to be changed, but that's about it.

If the burner orifice is fixed and non-replaceable, then it cannot be changed from natural gas to propane.

Only a licensed HVAC/gas technician-repairman should make the changes.

You can probably change the orifices your self. Be sure and turn off the gas. I don't think you need to change the regulator.

1. Go to the Hardware Store and asked for some LP gas orifices for a hot water heater. A real hardware store, skip walfart or some chain.
2. Turn off the gas at your hot water heater.
3. Run a new glass line from the LP Tank with LP regulator to your water heater.
4. Find the orifices, they are near where the flame comes out. Just remove and replace, you may need come plumber tape to make the screws threads gas tight.

5. Go for it, talk to your local hardware man, I am sure he will be plenty of help.
