The Thailand National Conservation Centre in Lampang, near Chiangmai is one place that is re-training the mahouts and their elephants in putting shows for a living. This is due to modernisation that has driven them out of work. The elephants are cared for there and are dependent on the visitors to sustain them. You can visit them to watch the show, do an overnight elephant trek or even engage in a 3-day elephant training course to be a mahout too. Your money will go towards the mahouts and their elephants there.

I think the government and other conservation groups are already doing quite well enough to help them. However, I do suggest that local mahouts and villagers to be a little more supportive eventhough certain cultural/traditional issues may raise from time to time.

Stop bringing those elephants to Bangkok/Pattaya!!! If anyone needs/wants to get in touch with these gentle beasts, just go to those national parks for goodness sakes!
