Getting NYS plates and registration for an out of state car?

My mother just gave me her car that I drove last month from Texas to NYC. I car is registered and has Texas plates and its also fully insured, but now I want to change my car plates to NYS plates and I am clueless about these things. Can anyone PLEASE help as to what I need to do next?

Just bring your TX title, proof of NY residency, proof of NY insurance, your NY license, and your checkbook to the DMV office.
