Probably not a good idea.
But they can be well used in your garden by putting them around your plants, or in your compost heap.

Not unless you have a garbage disposal and run a lot of hot water. We don't have a disposal and my husband keeps dumping them in the sink. Argh! I'm sure I'll have to call a plumber someday...

Sinks normally have soap and oils deposited into them. This coats the piping. The coffee grounds will stick to the sides of the piping and cause a clog.

There's a lot of debate about how good of an idea it is, since they can clump and get stuck in the u-bend or in the sewer pipes. It seems if you mix them with enough water, and especially if you have a garbage disposal to break up clumps, then it's okay.
