Generally it's made of some leafy herb, olive oil, lemon juice, and either ground garlic or ground pine nuts. The herb is usually basil although it can also be cilantro or arugula. There are a number of recipes for pesto, and it's very versatile.
The fat comes from the oil and pine nuts. If you make your own you can avoid the fat, but then it won't taste as good. The amount of oil that goes into it can be pretty surprising.

4. Olive oil
5. Pine nuts or walnuts.
I dont know if it is fattening or not. Maybe it is as it is taken with pasta sprinkled with lots of cheese
