Jesus was the Jewish Messiah but as they rejected him they called those who believed in him Christians, followers of Christ.

Many Jews DO believe Jesus is the Messiah. They prefer to be called Messianic Jews (my teacher is one of them).
The simple answer is: we don't have to be Jews because God doesn't require it. It's true Jesus brought the New Covenant to the Jews, in fulfillment of Jeremiah 31:31-34. But after He ascended to Heaven, He opened up the New Covenant to Gentiles (see Acts 10:9-48 thru 11:1-18, for example). There was no requirement within Jesus' command that these Gentiles first become Jews. However, there were many Messianic Jewish believers who felt strongly that Gentiles should first become Jews (including being circumcised) and then "convert" to Christianity. Paul rebuked these early believers and reminded them that the Mosaic Law was done away with and replaced by something better.
Read Acts 15, then read Galatians 2:11-21.
EDIT: Quantrill, I was careful to only reference Messianic Jews. I do understand that you believe such a person ceases to become a Jew when he or she accepts Jesus as Messiah. And for the record, I've always maintained it's Gentiles who "convert," and not Jews, since "salvation is of the Jews." (John 4:22b). But I gave you a "thumbs up" anyway, because you're my friend.

reliable question. Jesus became born into the Jewish ethnicity, and became a practising Jew. A "finished Jew" may well be a technical term for Christians simply by fact Jesus became sent to fulfill Jewish prophecies some Messiah or Savior, and The Messiah completes Judaism. So if all Jews believed somebody else became their Jesus, i think that they had call themselves Christians or that they had use "carried out Jews". practising Jews to this present day have not got self belief Jesus is the Messiah, and are nonetheless waiting for him. "Christianity" is concerning following Jesus Christ and His teachings. Jews do no longer use the hot testomony, simply by fact it starts with Jesus, and has teachings in line with Him. Jews additionally persist with many of the traditions (which includes no longer ingesting beef, and wearing a prayer scarf whilst praying) from the old testomony, whilst Christians tend to no longer persist with them so heavily. Many Christians have self belief interior the Trinity- Father (God), Son (Jesus), and the Holy Spirit. yet Judaism basically refers to a million and basically a million god. The Trinity is a sprint frustrating to understand simply by fact Christianity is monotheistic. i wish that clears issues up! : )

Jews practice Judaism, Christians follow Christianity. Pretty simple. Jews do not give Jesus much thought maybe he was Jewish maybe not, heck he might not even have existed.
And as a correction to Suzanne many Jews do not believe he is the savior for if they did then they would be Christians not Jews.

You think that Jews no longer accept Jesus as being Jewish? Is that what they are teaching now in the Catholic church? Even they could not stoop that low. You should re-examine that one. While at it, you might ask what a Jew is, as you don't seem to know the answer to that one either.

Jesus was the Christ ( the Messiah) of the Jews. One of his purposes was to bring the gentiles (non Jews) to God..to open that door to salvation to the world. We could be born-again Jews but it is not necessary to follow the Jewish traditions anymore to be acceptable by God, because of Jesus.

Jesus was Jewish, early Christians still considered themselves Jews. I always found it interesting that Christianity like Buddhism don't have any adherents in the cultures they started in. But to answer your question, Christians like pork too much

In a sense, Catholics are Jews (spiritually speaking).
They are just Jews that accepted the revelation of Christ and believed that the prophesies had been fulfilled.
Jews that accepted Christ used the name Christian to signify that they were followers of Christ and accepted His death, ressurection and divinity.
So Christian or "Catholic" replaced the term Hebrew or Jew. Plus, we don't really share that cultural heritage anymore - i.e. there are many "ethnic Jews" that do not practice Judaism.

Jesus taught that the Jewish beliefs about God were wrong.
Jews believe in the Old Testiment of the Bible Christians believe in the New Testiment and only include the Old Testiment as background information.

Because Judaism is a religion, and Christianity is a religion two different, religions. P.S. Jewish is not a race, it is a religion! there is only one race the human race , which can be sub-classified into white, Hispanic, Asian, or black, but I prefer not to sub-classify
