I want it taken out to make a room larger. Would a contractor know or do I need to hire an engineer or architect to tell me? Thank you for your help.

While a contractor may have an opinion, I'd feel a lot better hiring a professional engineer to take a look. The engineer's opinion will be in writing, and you can take that to court if your house caves in.

Here is one way, crawl up in your attic and see if their is any trusses nailed off to your wall. Where is your wall located? On the exterior perimeter or one of the inside walls. I agree with the comment before mine, to a degree. Even though an engineer will know so will a contractor that has enough experience. Just to get an engineers stamp of approval can range from 500.00 on up. If a licensed contractor makes an assumption regarding the wall, you can bet it is a good one because they won't take unnecessary chances with there license if not needed. Good luck!!

I agree with stuart. Get an engineer. I've seen contractors be wrong, then the engineers have to go back and totally redo EVERYTHING. I've heard horror stories from engineers and architects who have told contractors how to do something then they didn't follow what was told and the contractor had to redo everything. So yes, get an engineer to size it up, not a contractor.
