I just want a simple tool for welding wire jewelry such as earrings and necklaces. I can only find large expensive tools on the web. Are simple welders even availiable?

Did you say WIRE jewelry?

Most of the cheap MIG welders you can find at hardware stores would be a nightmare for wire jewelry. I would say that your best bet would be a gas torch.

This is especially true since you may want to explore different metals in your jewelry making. Metals that MIG welders just are not equipped to work with.

A gas torch will allow you to anneal the wire. You can use it to heat and bend small pieces. It will also let you solder, which is a very useful skill in jewelry making.

Lots of jewelers use a specific torch called the "Little Torch" by Smith Equipment. It has a range of really tiny tips, so you don't overheat your wire. I think it can run on Propane/Oxygen, or Acetylene/Oxygen. I cannot advise you as to which is better for you. I use Acetylene, because I have a slightly bigger smith torch that I use to weld sheet metal, and I need the hotter flame that Acetylene provides.

I think a torch would be able to do so many useful jobs...compared to an electric welder. A TIG welder is probably the only electric alternative for what you need...but they cost a bundle, and still lack the versatility of a torch for your job.

Just do a simple web search under jewelry welders or capacitive discharge spot welder. Here are some I came up with.
