ok, old computer, gateway 2000, had windows 95, want to fix for nephew to use for playing solitare and word for homework, nothing else. when turning on, get message that IFSHP.SYS is not there, system halted, help, what can I do, if fixable

It is fixable what I would do is just reinstall Windows and start from there. If you have any questions just email me.

You can fix this by running REPAIR from the install CD or you can reinstall windows 95, or better: format and install Windows XP (if the system can handle it).

When a file becomes corrupted, Windows won't say the file is corrupted, it will just report that the file is not there. Running the repair from the Install CD will replace all files orignally installed but will not erase important files. Since this machine will not be used for the internet, you won't need to worry about updates etc. so running the repair makes the most sense.

Updating the machine to WinXP will allow you to use more programs widely available but again, only if the system can handle it.

even as i might want to say Pitoms answer is a negative element to say in this...i will ought to agree. in case you cant discover any authentic answer merely purchase a sparkling computer, or once you've the money ask a buddy that is time-honored with alot about computers if he might want to discover you some solid aspects.

get windows 95 CD insert it into Cd-ROM drive and repair it
