All the ones mentioned already. Even the good Mutt. I think the most important thing is how well they took to training and trials. And what their purpose is for that officer.
A dachshund wouldn't be best pick to pull a criminal down but might be excellent to smell for explosives

There are many different breeds used, but German Shepherds seem to be the breed utilized most. Their extreme intelligence, ease of training and versatility make them best suited for all aspects needed from a K-9 officer. Yes Belgian Malinois are gaining in popularity, I have worked with only one from our county in the past. Rottweilers and Doberman Pinschers are also used but I think more so in the European countries. I've seen Labrador and Golden Retrievers, Beagles and mixed breeds used as bomb and drug dogs. Can't say that I've seen a Basset Hound used, but they have excellent noses, so that could be right up their alley! Some police departments also use Bloodhounds, they are mainly used in tracking but I have seen a couple of them used strictly as drug dogs. Again, GSDs have it all, they are on average, bigger and stronger than the Malinois and have the aggressiveness that the other breeds lack (those used for bomb, drug and tracking purposes only). God bless ALL those K-9 officers who put their lives on the line everyday protecting all of us!!!

For detector and dual-purpose work: Belgian Malinios / Tervuren, Dutch Shepherds, Czech Shepherds, Labs, Retrievers, Rottweilers, Dobermans.
For tracking: all of the above plus hounds (bloodhounds).
For SAR: all of the above plus collies, cockers, beagles...etc.
