I guess that would depend on which NCO's your referring to. When I was in the Air Force, the system was set up that you were an E-3 one day and an E-4 the next. So, you'd be playing games with your buddies one day, and be an NCO the next. How do you expect them to change overnight? There were no classes on what you should do or shouldn't do. You learned as you went.
On the flip side of the coin, you have, say an E-6 or E-7 that may have 15-20 years in the military, yet, he has to answer to someone who just graduated college and has a 2nd Lt before his name. Has to salute the 2nd Lt, for what? Some old tradition? most, if not all NCO's have some college. Some, like myself had a 4 year college degree, yet we weren't smart enough, and had to be led around by a 6 week wonder.
Know what your talking about, or walk a mile in someones shoes, before you make comments you know nothing about.

In 17 years in the Army, I have met MANY immature NCOs. This is one of the main reasons that I didn't become an NCO myself until 10 years into my career....I thought that the Army did a horrible job of training its leaders and I wanted no part of it. When I finally was forced into being an E-5 and went to PLDC (now called WLC) the first phase of NCO leader training, I quickly realized that the training was great! I then picked up E-6 and E-7 in record time and am now a Warrant Officer.
Anyway, yes, they're supposed to be leaders. My experience tells me that the majority of the doofus NCOs, at least in the Army, are products of piss-poor mentorship. They had crummy leaders and do their best to emulate them. It's a difficult trend to overcome.

Many NCO's are in their early twenties. Some are bad but many are pretty good. Looking back on things I'd be terrified to be responsible for a squad or platoon of guys during a war. Being an NCO is a heavy burden. So I salute the good ones. Yes there are bad ones but the good out number them fortunately.

Well, when the president of USA can act imature and dance like going gaga instead of being the model president (that was the impression ppl had when they voted for him didn't they?) NCO can imature. I knw... they are supposed to be hierarchy heads.... but hmm.... well, it sure is bewildering... but wait a minute, the president dancing was a lil' amusing and light, so, i'm not cursing him or anything for that- a person needs to let go sometimes.

NCOs act imature for three reasons:
1) they got promoted WAY too fast. (other wise known as fast trackers)
2) they have soldiers who don't really care what needs to happen and they get fed up with it and then just have to put them in their place
3) they haven't had enough guidance to learn how to take care of other soldiers. they went from SPC (not really caring about anyone just themselves) to SGT (having to take care of not just theirself but also three other people)

There are good and bad in every walk of life. NCO's are people which by nature ... we all make mistakes.
Most learn from their mistakes...others take longer!
