Very often I've heard older people say how when some child is badly misbehaving they deserve a smack. I can't say I disagree with them.
There again I've seen one woman hit her daughter really hard around the back of her head cause her daughter did a handstand on some grass - I was a passenger in a vehicle or I would have said something to her - it was over the top - quite brutal.
So there appears to be a marked difference between a sharp slap on the lower leg that inflicts no damage other than to embarrass the child a little and a wallop around the head that can cause an injury.
I think those of us who have decent standards know that when you hit your child you do it out of temper and frustration - sometimes even fear (if your kid tries to run into a busy road for example) and you very rarely ever raise your hand to your kid anyway - a shout is normally enough.
So I'd have to say hitting your kids only happens when your temper snaps - so you shouldn't do it - but for a government to pass a law that says you can't smack your kids - then I think that is ridiculous.

i do think we are becoming part of of an increasing "nanny state" we shouldn't be told how to raise our children but you have to acknowledge that there is something seriously wrong with at least some people's parenting skills, i think it's actually been the trend to not smack or punish that has resulted in the current amount of children with "behavioural problems" i was smacked whenever i did wrong, but i don't consider that i was "beaten" or abused but you knew there was a consequence to your actions, i think that kids these days are not being taught this properly and there is no respect or empathy being passed along to the next generations at all and that's why it seems OK for kids to hurt and bully each other in a way that i never heard of when i was younger, i know that kids are and were always a bit cruel but its up to parents, teachers and others in the position to educate children to show them what is right and wrong.

My personal view (and please dont shout at me for this)is that smacking passes on negative ideals...it shows a child that being physical with someone is an appropriate action...that it is ok to hit someone! A young child wont understand the why's and where's of smacking just that if someone does something they feel is wrong then they should be smacked!!!
I think adults should teach by example....and children learn ALOT from their home life...surely we want them to learn diplomacy, compromise, consequences....what does a smack really teach a child discipline wise? I was actually more scared of my parents when they smcked me...even if it was small tap I would feel ashamed and that they didnt love me...evne when they siad they did...and i can understand as an audlt and a childcarer how i felt that way.
Sorry if that raises debate with people, its just my opinion!

Its a difficult one this one! Being brought up I used to get a smack on the back of the legs or hand when I had done something naughty and personally I dont think there should be a problem with doing that to a child! But obviously there is a problem with beating a child!!

I agree it should be banned. For these people who have left comments saying that it shows who's boss you have got a wrong attitude towards life and it stinks if you ask me. You don't give birth to children to give them a good smacking. I think getting a few words giving to a child lets them know that they have done wrong. We could all fight the case of when adults are silly when they have had a drink or have done summic wrong should we get a smack too cause we have done summic wrong??Ive never been smacked as a child but if ive ever done anythink wrong my parents have always had words with me and that has always worked for me

i never thought about smacking in that way, thanks! your right, i have an eight year old girl who has been smacked a few times. she knows her limit and is on the whole 99% a well behaved little girl. she is now having to be home educated due to bullying. she said thank you in the class room and the kids made her life hell for it. when the parents were called they did nothing and in fact the teacher was so scared of the parents that she did not even bother with the majority of them. at one point i wondered why i was so het up on my daughter being polite, considerate and well behaved. parents can't be bothered any more. but i don't think it's due to the fact that they think they are in the wrong for smacking, they just can't be bothered to see it through.

In some countries spanking is already against the law.
There is no reason to hit a child EVER. Why is it okay for an adult to hit a child but not okay for a child to hit someone else? It doesn't make sense. There are other forms of discipline that work better. Spanking is a lazy way of parenting

I think alot of people have witnessed people smacking their children in public for being noisy or whining. I certainly have. What happens in their homes? In my personal opinion, that is child abuse. There are other, more effective, ways to deal with it.

Government and Do-gooders interference in people's personal lives has got utterly out of hand. If you kiddie is really naughty and having tantrums for example then a sharp slap usually indicates who is the boss. There has always been abuse, there will always be abuse, regardless of what rules and regulations are set up. If life has survived for the millions of years it has then it is about time the Government and its Do-gooders woke up to the fact and left familes alone to bring their children up as they think fit (and judging by past years, they did a better job than today's parents with the rules to be obeyed).
