okay, first off, most everybody ahead of me is incorrect.. MA is now open to first termers, and you do NOT do law enforcement. increasingly, that has been parceled out to civilians.. It's Force Protection, mostly.. security.. opportunities include K9 handler, although for that you do need to be at least an E5 in most cases( rare instances of kids getting picked up for that C school right after A school). For the most part, you can expect to do a year long tour in one of two lovely spots: GITMO or the Litter box at least once.

I am an Navy MA, Most of these answers are wrong or near wrong. Navy MA is still considered the Law Enforcement of the Navy, but they we work hand in hand with DOD Police. We are also Force Protection/Anti-Terrorism. You can join and go to MA "A" school from basic training. You will be trained in basic law enforcement techniques as well as UCMJ and some administrative procedures. MA's are slowly moving away from shipboard duty. Yes MA's are deployed to any areas of need Iraq, Afghanistan, Africa, Guantanamo Bay. The advancement is slowing down for MA recently. There are other opportunities for other training in the MA rate from Small Arms instructor to Military Police investigator. All depends on your advancement and desire to get the training. All MA's will do time as Patrolman getting JQR (Job Qualifications Requirements) for Patrolman, EVOC (Emergency Vehicle Operator) and Harbor Patrol. Duty days will depend on the schedule that the command is on. Some commands are 8 hours 4days on 2 days off, some are 12 hour shifts 3 days on 2 days off. You will have to qualify for firearms (9mm, shotgun, and M-16, and probably M-60) You will also have to be qualified with pepper spray, handcuffing, expandable baton. The MA rate can be very cut throat and there is back stabbing in the MA rate. Be aware of who you befriend, and who you trust.

Forget it. Master at Arms is an additional duty, that is given to a sailor, not a full time job. Now, if you want to be something along the lines of Shore Patrol, as in the law enforcement branch of the Navy, then join the marines. If you want to be in Law Enforcement, join the Air Force.

The best thing that I can tell you is to go to college and get an degree in Criminal Justice.

Join the Navy, let the Navy recruiter know that your wishes are to be a MAA,
master at arms. Most of the time you will be on a ship, sure duty some.
your duties will rang from drug testing( peeing in the cup) court marshals and NJP's (Non judicial punishment), arresting someone on ship, guard duty and so on. At sea, long hours. in-port 8 to 10 hours days, and lots of paper work.

If you join the Navy before going to college, the 1st chance you get go to night college in your home port. This will help you make rank faster. For your promotions know the book only. theirs book smarts and job smarts, book smarts on on the tests.

Good luck and god speed......

BMMC USN(ret).

They go everywhere the Navy goes. And they are incharge of way too many things for me to list here. But if no one else is responsible for it the MA are. Advancement isn't the greatest.
