do I just file on the total income (double taxing me) from the year that I made in VA and MD or just file VA income in VA and MD income in MD?

Assuming that you moved from one state to another, you will file a part-year return in both states, listing the income you earned in that state or while domiciled in the state.

The second statement is accurate. A state can only tax income you've made while residing there. It gets more complicated if you earned the money in one state, and resided in a different state.

If both states have a state withholding tax, yes, you file state taxes in both with only the amount earned in that state.

You would only file your tax returns in one state, generally, the state that you lived in for the majority of the fiscal year.

That being said, you are more than likely to get a decent tax return since you would be subject to state with-holding tax for one of the jobs.
