The anglican church or Church of England was formed in the sixteenth century. Henry VIII was given the title Defender of the Faith by the pope of the time. In his effort to seek a divorce from Catherine of Aragon he broke away from the Roman Catholic church. His argument was that in marrying his brothers wife his union was blighted and barren, therefore not legal. He also refused to give the pope supreme authority over England and Wales because he believed he was King by divine right. There was reformation happening in other areas of Europe at the time, so Henry, being the entrepreneur, created his own church and state. The title of Defender of the Faith is still bestowed on the monarch and head of the anglican today,so currently it is Elizabeth II.

The wife of King Henry VIII, Catherine of Aragon, could not produce a male heir for him to inherit the throne from him, so he asked the pope for an annulment from her with the right to re-marry. When the pope refused his request, Old Henry made himself head of the church in England. He then married Anne Boleyn. All of his subjects then had to belong to his church, called the Church of England or the Anglican Church. This was in 1534 shortly after Luther broke with the Catholic Church (1517) and started his own following. The American branch of the Anglican Church is known as the Episcopal Church but that only came about in the 1780's with a man named Samuel Seabury.

In the United Kingdom, it is called the Church of England or Anglican church. In the US, it is called the Episcopal Church. It broke fellowship with the Catholic Church over who was head of the church. The King/Queen of England is considered to be the head of the Anglican Church followed by the Archbishop of Canterbury. The Pope is considered the head of the Catholic Church.

I think you mean the Anglican church (that may be why you are having trouble finding information). It is also known as the Church of England, and in the U.S. as the Episcopal Church.

Hope this helps!
