It's more often at a convenience store, instead of a grocery store. The little convenience stores still consider it service. But the Safeway will just point you at lighters or tell you what aisle the whole boxes of books of matches are.

Sorry, But I would have to say 99.9% do not give out matches anymore. Just like the rest of todays society they actually COST now!!! Ever heard the phrase nothing in life is free?? That phrase even applies to a book of matches. Unfortunately todays society has become one where if you do happen to actually get something for "free"; it probably has strings attached. Therefore making it NOT free in all actuality!!
Though it would be a lot more pleasant of a world if people could trust others and your "word" was worth an actual value like it used to!!!
Just my opinion there!!
Have a great day to all who read!!

I haven't gotten matches since mid 90's. The store I go to now will give you a free lighter (2/$1 or .79 each) if you by a carton of cigarettes.

While very few stores offer you free matches, almost all of them will provide you a pack for free if you ask for it. Several of the stores that i frequent, however, still offer them.

Four years ago the place where I worked gave them as a courtesy, however, on the few occasions when we ran out the customers were so rude, we wondered why we even bothered.
