I had this problem also. I couldn't find a download or upgrade. I think the upgrade is Office 2007. In the end I had to request the file again, saved as a 2003 doc.

If someone gives you a Word ( 2003 ) Document on a Floppy ( for example) and if you already have Word 2007 installed on your computer, then Microsoft Word 2007 will automatically convert it to the new Version and open it for you.
But if:
If someone gives you a Word ( 2007 ) Document on a Floppy ( for example) and if you already have Word 2003 installed on your computer, then Microsoft Word 2003 will not automatically convert it to the new Version and open it for you.
This is because Word 2007 being a newer and updated version, there will be too many things different in it then Word 2003. The best option for you will be to get Word 2007 installed on your computer.
Good Luck.

Well you go to word 2007 and go into save as and you should get the option to save the document as a word 2003 document.

You can't. You will either need to purchase and install 2007 or have whoever sent you the document save it "down" to the 2003 version.

In Word 2007, they have made a new format, that is when we save a document in Word 2007, there is an option for saving it in compatible format(which can be recognized by lower versions too), or another option to save as *.docx, which can be opened only in Word2007, it's better not to save in that format, b'cos Word 2007 is not available everywhere.

You install Word 2007. duh.
There are probably not any "official" programs out there that can convert from 2007 to 2003, because one of microsoft's schemes for forcing you to upgrade is by making sure the old versions can't read the new versions. You may be able to find an open-source conversion program out there, though.
