I think it's rude, but some people have emergencies that they absolutely need to answer the phone for. I think it's more acceptable to inform the person you are starting a conversation with that you are expecting a call in the near future and that you would need to answer it. That way they know it's coming and aren't offended.

For the most part I think it's rude and make the other person uncomfortable. I excuse it if, for example, it's my sister or friend and it's her child or husband calling because they could really need something but otherwise I think you should silence the phone, finish the conversation then return the call as soon as you can.

When someone does that to me, I just walk away. If they would rather answer their phone than continue their conversation with me, it's ok with me. But I'm not going to stand there like a fool.
I don't have much use for cell phones, anyway. Certainly they have a use, but most people let themselves be controlled by them. It becomes an electronic leash.

It's rude no matter who, or where. It's the same with texting. Interrupting a call you are on to take another call or answer a text is also extremely rude. I also end my conversations with those people immediately. I do try to be polite about how I do it.

Depends really - if you're just chatting with close friends and there's a call I think it's ok but not if it goes on for ages
but in a deep discussion or negotiation etc it's downright rude
making a call while talking to someone is even worse

It is rude, unless you are on call 24/7 and trouble shoot emergencies, turn the thing off when with friends, out for dinner, in the theatre, etc.
Same thing applies to home telephone. That is what answering machines are for.

I think it's extremely rude. I have told people goodbye, turned around and left the area we were talking at.
I figure if the person I was talking to would rather talk to someone else than let their voice mail pick up, screw em'.

Its rude.
Forgivable ONLY if its an emergency situation (i.e. waiting for a phone call from a pregnant mommy, or from someone who is deathly ill, etc).
