Because circuits behave mathematically. If we know the math, we know how the circuit is supposed to behave. If we know how it is supposed to behave, then we know when something is wrong. Also if we know how it is supposed to behave, then when we manipulate it, we know what the response will be and we can continue manipulations till the desired response is achieved. It's called designing.

In high school you'll need to take up to Calculus for sure; otherwise you may not get into a college with a good engineering program, and that wouldn't be very useful. In college you may not take that many classes labeled math, but they will use a LOT of math. Electrical engineers use electricity to make things we use. Like speakers, electronic components, and all sorts of other things.

All engineers use a lot of mathematics. Mathematics is the finite method of solving problems and eliminates a lot of guesswork. While math may not always put you exactly on the dot of the solution, most of the time it gets you very close, thus the application of design safety factors. While computers perform most of the calculations today, the engineer has to know and understand what theory, formulae and equations are required to solve his/her particular problem be it mechanical, electrical, structural, etc.

Most of the drudgery of cranking out analyses are handled by simulation programs now. EE's don't really sit there like accountants.
