Basically, yeah. You only need 1 kidney to live a healthy life, so you could have one 'dud' kidney and no real problems or illnesses. If both are dodgy, then it's "kidney failure" and trouble.

It depends on why the kidneys are failing. In the case of diabetes, both will generally fail, same as with bilaeral kidney disease. I would have to know the main diagnosis to be able to fully answer the question. If one fails, the other won't necessarily fail. Again, it all depends on the main diagnosis.
