An ISO file is a description of what the actual CD should work, including auto-boot instructions and all files.

Most burning software can "Create a Bootable CD / DVD" from the ISO file. You can't just Copy & paste the file to CD.

I don't use, Easy CD Creator or Nero (not free), instead I use the free and excellent ISO Recorder, from:

The iso image should be bootable on it's own. You need to choose an option in your burning software to Burn Image to Disk, or something similar.

You may want to check if your download is good. Most linux distro's provide MD5 checksums for their iso files. Install a free MD5 checker (http://superb-east.dl.sourceforge.net/sourceforge/md5summer/md5v12005.zip) and use it to examine the iso file. It will generate a character string that you can compare to the one on the linux download site. These strings should be identical. If not, you need to try your download again.
