My mother had a hip replacement last friday and lost over a litre of blood, the technique that the surgeon used was to clean her own blood and give it back to her, but they could only return 400 mls, she now has to make over 600 mls herself. My mum is in her late 70's

They allow you to donate 300 ml of blood every 3 months. Guess this is the time required to make up for 300 ml of blood. However, a shortage of 300 ml does not matter much. so you have to really consider recovery of first 300 ml.

The blood cells are made in the bone marrow. The age factor can make blood production slower.

The docs must have given her medicines and iron tablets for helping her body make more hemoglobin. Under medical supervision, the recovery should not need more than 2 months to the most.

Don't worry about the 600ml of blood loss. 70% of it is made up of water. So she would have made up most of her blood volume by now with intravenous or oral fluids.
As long as her red blood count is normal before the operation, the loss is insignificant
