I don't really know much about being on disability. I was talking to a bunch of social workers Friday and they were pressuring me to get on it and asking me when I was getting it. How do you get that started? Can I do it without having seen a doctor yet? My drs. appt is 5 weeks from now...

Are there downsides to being on disability? Like, does it look bad? I wouldn't want to have it for the rest of my life... just untill my **** is fixed.

I am in Texas, USA

You need to apply at the Social Security office. They offer walk-in appointments, but be prepared for very long lines...could be a couple hour wait time. They will explain the whole process and even help you fill out the application...

If you are approved, it takes six months or more to start receiving benefits.

After the application, you get schedules for a mental evaluation set up by the SSA---you wioll also need your doctor's documentation though

Either go to or call your local social security office and they can help you with all of that. I feel like you will have to see a doctor before they approve you though. And getting approved is very hard in some states anyway. But it never hurts to try. Good Luck!!

Where do you live? In Quebec, I'm pretty sure that a psychiatrist would have to fill out forms in order for you to begin receiving disability payments.

In Quebec, disability falls under Regie des Rentes.

Good luck.:)

Call 1-800-772-1213 and listen to the prompts. They will ask if you need to speak to a representive , select that option and explain to the representive the nature of your call. Good luck!

you can visit the soc sec web site and they have a walk through. What it ends up to be is that you have to prove your disabililty and how much it impacts your work.
