Greatest city on earth. I've been to many countries and NYC has it all. Very cool place and it is a good place to visit. I was there three time with my ship and not one person got in trouble. It was a great time. The people were nice too contrary to popular belief.

New York City is the most improbable city on earth.

You have a large number of Jews and a large number of Palestinians, Indians and Pakistanis, and numerous other such pairs of ethnic groups, and they all frequent each others' businesses and never blow each other up.

You can get any kind of food you want, and most of it you can get delivered to your door at 2am. You can find authentic Mexican food made by a Chinese family, or a French restaurant run by a Jamaican. There's nothing you can't find, unless it would be a drive-through, or a restaurant where you're allowed to smoke.

You can find any kind of live entertainment you want, from classical ballet to street kids beating on plastic buckets. You can see an Appalachian man playing spoons in harmony with native African percussionists. You can hear a man play "Danny Boy" on a Chinese instrument.

Being mercantile rather than industrial, the pollution is low. On some days, you can smell roasting chestnuts of street vendors from two blocks away. A lot of the city's business is done on bicycles, including pedicabs, deliveries, and messengers. Unlike other cities, where you have clusters of non-competing unrelated businesses, businesses of a single type tend to cluster. There's the Flower District, the Diamond District, and many others. The whole island of Manhattan is one giant Mall.

The people have some odd quirks. For all their city sophistication, there is as much of a tendency in NYC to buy a car and rent a home as anywhere, even though the parking costs more than the apartment. In that respect, they're just like rednecks from the Midwest with more cultured accents.

It truly is the greatest city in the world, if you like cities in the first place.

Personally, I can't stand New York City. I am sick to death of TV shows and movies that take place there. But to be fair, I don't like any big cities.
I want to hear the birds sing in the morning.
generally southerners are particularly not very fond of New Yorkers. They tend to be very abrupt and talk so fast it's exhausting to listen to them. Kind of like a pestering little brother.

But I'll go with what someone said in the Atlanta Journal constitution shortly after 9/11,
"They make be damned Yankees,
but they're OUR YANKEES!"

I've never been to New York, But it's at the top of my places to go list. I think of classic B grade 40's & 50'S movies, I think, electric, bright, insomnia, ecentric people, lots of money, I think of people like Howard stern, Donald Trump, Frank Sinatra, I think of very large apples, neon signs, yellow cabs, rude people with hearts of gold, Jewish American accents, I think of NYPD cops and NYFD hero's, I think steaming hot coffe and donuts and bagels on a frosty morning, and most of all, I feel a great sense of community spirit. Now, wheres my passport?

As this is a military question I assume you are referring to 9/11.
It means we are activated to make sure nothing of the magnitude of 9/11 ever happens on US or Allied soil ever again.
