He's teething. Give him some good strong chew toys to chew on instead, and every time he tries to chew a person, gently tell him no, and hand him one of his chew toys instead.

This is the time to teeth, and if he is being easy on you and not breaking the skin, then he really is not biting. He is mouthing you.
You can stop it with two steps:
One, when his teeth hit your skin, say ouch very loudly like you are hurt and walk away. If he follows you nipping at your heels, go to another room and shut the door on him for a few seconds. Come back in the room as if nothing ever happened. This does not work on the first try, but it does work after a few times. And make sure you are not roughing him up with your hands. Give him no reason to make a mistake.
Second... chew toys are a must. A variety of soft toys. Stuffed puppy kongs are great at this age. Gives their mouths something to do. Chilly Bones are good. You put them in the freezer for about an hour and they sooth the gums.
One other thing to be aware of.
With teething comes a bit of discomfort on the back of the jaw, so the ears may be a little uncomfortable. This means the leash may be almost painful. Keep walks short and fun. Never pull on the leash, he will only associate moving forward with the pain and preasure. Lure him forward with a treat in stead... not pulling.
Enjoy your sweet puppy.

I think you are in serious need of a trainer. Whatever behavior you dont want from him as an adult needs to be addressed now. If he doesnt get training, then odds are against him for a future as a balanced, happy dog. the growling is most likely play, but if not directed in the right manner can become rough play, and later frustration and aggression. Minor things from puppy hood that are not addressed can turn into MAJOR things in adulthood and if your dog bites someone you can have a lawsuit and your dog ordered to be euthanised. Golden retrievers are great dogs, but very active!! They have needs to be met, otherwise they will be just as destructive as any dog. Please sign up for puppy obedience, watch the dog training shows on tv, Its me or the dog, the dog whisperer, good dog u, whatever. Get some help while he is still young enough to blossom into a wonderful happy dog.

all puppies are prone to biting, it is actually a way of play for them that they begin at a very young age, the trick is to teach them not to do it. Now you don't do this by smacking them on the nose and saying no, News flash, the word no to dog from you is like Charlie Brown's teach telling you no, you can't understand a thing she says. So you have to learn to speak there language. When you playing with your puppy and he starts to bite you, and you want him to stop, simply scream real load, ouch!!!!!!!!!, then move away. I know sounds stupid right. Ok, now here is the science behind all this. Like I said, puppies start biting as a form of play when they are really young. But do you think they all bite the same. No some of them bite a little harder. when they are playing if one puppy bites another too hard, it will yelp and move away from the one that did the biting. Its kinda like the whole, "Your playing to hard, I don't want to play with you anymore." So the one that does the biting sits there and realizes that his brother that he loves to play with doesn't want to play with him because he is too rough. So what is he going to do. He is going to go start playing with him again, and this time, not bite him as hard. Trust me, I have read many books on this and my favorite that explains this in pretty much the same way I just did is called "The Dog Listener" by Jan Fennell. I have a 5 month old German Shepherd puppy and it worked like a charm with him. hope this helps

Any puppy that age is going to be biting and chewing--he's teething. You need to show him that it's not acceptable for him to chew on you, though. One way to do this is to tap him on the nose firmly (don't hit him hard--just a tap) and say "no" firmly. If he starts to chew on other things, do the same thing, but then give him one of his own toys to chew on, so he understands what he can and can't chew on. The fact that he's a golden actually is working in your favor--they don't bite as much as other breeds. Since they were bred as bird hunting dogs, they were bred not to clamp down on the birds when they retrieved them.

All pups of that age are going to nip and bite. It is called mouthing. You pup is teething and need proper toys to help him with his need to chew. Look for sturdy toys like nyla bones or hard rubber toys to help him through this stage of his teething time. also if he does get carried away gently grab his muzzle and look his straight in the eye and tell him NO BITE and they give him a toy that is appropriate for him to chew on. This will take some time for him to get but with your persistence he will get it. Golden's are very smart and do learn quickly if their owner has patients and persistence.
Enjoy your Golden pup!

He doesn't understand you are dominant . When he bites you slap him hard. If he bit another dog it would put him in his place allot rougher. Get him toys don't let him bite you or any other person. Its called being Pack leader. He has to know that people are dominant over him. If you don't take immediate control over that dog get rid of it. You could save a child from having its face ripped off. You bleeding hart dog people are going to get someone hurt.

We gave our Golden pups chew toys because they are teething. Substitute these toys for your arms, furniture, etc.

sounds like you didn't have any idea what you were getting into...research the breed and search for a training class for you and the dog.
