On my first visit to St. Croix, I had a really nice driver named JJ who met me at the airport. I was only there for a day to do some research and take in the local color. He was driving me through an exclusive gated community when he suddenly stopped in front of one home and went and grabbed a fresh coconut that had fallen on the ground. He quickly opened the back of his van and took out a machete from beneath some blankets. He placed the coconut on the ground and with one good whack cut off the top. Then he told me to drink the water. Of course, you never argue with a man holding a machete and found that the warm, slightly sweet clear liquid was the most delicious drink I have ever had.
JJ told me he believed it was great for detoxifying the body, especially the kidneys.
Here's additional information I just found on living-foods.com:

Tender coconut water is the nature’s purest drink the medicinal value of which has already been established beyond doubt. It is recommended in cases of gastro-enteritis and as a useful substitute to saline glucose. It is also prescribed in serious cases of diarrhoea and vomiting against dehydraÂtion. It increases blood circulation in the kidney and also serves as a urinary antiseptic.
