Religion:
It is the formation of the habitual experience of interaction with matter in a manner or format that is difficult to explain scientifically. It is a clearly described set of rules and/or guidelines that the pupil must follow in certain circumstances, and to form a habitual experience of compliance with said rules/guidelines. In the event of non-compliance, there are consequences that are equally clear to help the pupil remember the rules/guidelines that were agreed to. It is different to law in that the rules / guidelines are usually expected to be enforced by the pupil voluntarily, or that the pupil request that the consequences be used to assist in memory recollection, thereby helping said pupil to form the habits of their chosen discipline. The rules and/or guidelines are not negotiable by the pupils individually, but critical mass can change or adapt the rules if needed.

Spirituality:
It is a relationship with life on a deep emotional level that is connected to on a regular basis through the use of focused and attentive thoughts, words or actions in an attempt to establish a higher level of understanding of the disipline that is being followed.

Someone who is not following a prescribed disipline, but rather thinking, saying and acting how they choose to, and establishing a relationship with life, is spiritual but not religious.

Someone who is engaging in the habitual experience without establishing a relationship with life is religious but not spiritual.

Religion and spirituality and complementarily exclusive, meaning that they can exist alone, but together they support each other, which is why the strongest religions involve being spiritual.

There is no requirement for the teachings to be accurate, true, fair, just, logical or balanced in order for a prescribed disipline to be a religion.

There is no requirement for the relationship with life to be a connection with any particular form or incarnation, and can include an unlimited number of forms or incarnations, each to any degree of reverence that the disipline decides.

Someone who has just joined a religion is not religious, because a habit has not been formed.

Someone who has just begun creating a connection with life is not spiritual, because a relationship has not been formed.

The forming of a habit that is not part of a prescribed religion is still a religious experience, provided it meets the other criteria. If not, it's just a habit, nothing more.

This is a complex question and one that is very interesting to answer. Many people would try to answer it on their own but since God was the creator of the inherent need to worship, then the best answer would come from Him, and the pages of his word the Bible. When we look at the world and it's religious diversity we see that there are 19 major faiths and 10,000 smaller religions worldwide. With this tremendous amount of choices it would seem that it would confuse a person and they would want to know, "What in the world is religion anyway???" Some people feel that religions are just different roads leading to the same place, I'm sure you've heard that? It doesn't really matter which road you chose, since all roads lead to the same place. Most people reason that there is only only one Almighty God and ultimately these roads all lead to Him in the long run. But do they? Jesus clarified it for us when he was here on the earth, when he said these simple but true words, found at Matthew 7:13, 14, "For wide is the fate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it." So what was Jesus telling us? Was he stating that only those that didn't believe would be on the broad road? Where as believers would be on the narrow road? Remember how many religions, with how many worshipers there are in the world today, so that would not stand to reason. Let's go on as see how Jesus clarified his statement further, in his next statement at Matthew 7:15, there he says, "Be careful of false prophets. They will come to you looking gentle like sheep, but they are really like dangerous wolves." Further in verse 21 he says, "Not everyone saying Lord, Lord, will enter the Kingdom of heaven, but only those who do what my Father in heaven wants them to do." So it would be someone who was religious, just not the religion that was honored by his Father in the heavens, Jesus was warning that not all religions are good and not all religious teachers should be trusted.
There are many identifying marks of the true religion, in the beginning God did not give Adam and Eve a choice in Religion. So today He knows what i best for us and He still has the one true religion that He knows will bring about everlasting life for all mankind here on earth. Some of those identifying marks are, they would honor Him as the Only true God and use His name, He being the Almighty God. (Genesis17:1, Psalm 83:18) His name is Jehovah, By means of taking in accurate knowledge Jehovah and His son, Christ Jesus is how a person can gain everlasting life, ( John 17:3, 1 Timothy 2:4) The worldwide Preaching Work would also be involved, the same work Jesus instilled in his followers when he was here on the earth, (Matthew 24:14, Acts 1:8) what would they preach about? That God would bring back the original conditions that He wanted Adam and Eve to enjoy at the beginning of creation with no sickness, sorrow, tears, or death, (Revelation 21:3,4) How will this be accomplished? By means of His Kingdom arrangement, His government that we pray for, (Matthew 6:9, 10) "Thy Kingdom Come, Thy will be done on Earth, as it is in Heaven." Yes Jehovah by means of His King Christ Jesus as Leader will bring about marvelous conditions for the earth and it's inhabitants, and soon now, with many other blessings. And this would be given to it's people free, never a collection plate passed or any money asked. Remember Jesus words at Matthew 10:8 after he told his apostles to heal the sick, raise up the dead, make lepers clean, etc? Then he said, "You receive free, give free." According to one definition, “The spiritual dimension tries to be in harmony with the universe, strives for answers about the infinite, and comes especially into focus in times of emotional stress, physical and mental illness, loss, bereavement and death.” This desire for wholeness of being is not an intellectual attainment, for it is no less present in people with learning disability, but lies in the essence of what it means to be human.
